This chapter discusses mandible fractures, where mandible is the second most commonly fractured facial bone and the most common requiring treatment. The management of mandible fractures is directed by principles developed in both orthopedics and dentistry. An evaluation of the cervical spine is required prior to addressing a fracture of the mandible as the neck may be manipulated during reduction or fixation. Past medical history, past surgical history, medications, allergies, and social history must be obtained prior to proceeding with treatment. The dental numbering system is used to identify dental pathology and to describe the site of the fracture. The preferred radiologic assessment of a potential mandible fracture includes a panorex, mandible series, and reverse Towne’s view. Maxillomandibular fixation remains the appropriate treatment for nondisplaced, stable fractures and most condylar fractures.
