Abstract

This chapter discusses the nasal tip, which is conspicuously positioned in the center of the face and even subtle deformities can be immediately distracting, often overwhelming the other positive facial attributes that define beauty. The ideal nose is often considered the most normal nose, that is, one that blends in with the face and fails to call attention to it. Nasal analysis includes not only the size and shape of the nose, but how it relates to the rest of the face, height, gender, and ethnicity. Tip projection refers to the distance of the nasal tip from the coronal plane of the face, independent of the dorsum and length of the nose. Tip rotation parallels the degree of inclination of the nasolabial angle. The skin over the inferior third of the nose is characteristically thick and sebaceous, particularly in contrast to the soft tissues over the rhinion. The lateral crura are most responsible for the size and shape of the tip lobule and are the focus of most surgical maneuvers.
