Abstract

This chapter discusses soft tissue fillers of the face and liposuction of the face and neck, where analysis and subsequent augmentation of facial soft tissue by physicians requires knowledge of patient requirements and characteristics of the material used to augment. Dermalive is acrylic beads suspended in hyaluronic acid and is also currently undergoing studies as a soft tissue filler. AlloDerm is an acellular dermal graft which may be transplanted without rejection for both reconstructive and cosmetic purposes and comes in multiple thicknesses and sizes. Occasionally soft-tissue defects are filled with advancing one’s own skeletal framework as with the repositioning of the zygomatic complex for a malar deficiency. Polyethylene (HDPE), known as MedPore, is stiff and is used in chin and cheek implantation. The most commonly used nonbiologic soft-tissue filler currently is polytetrafluoroethylene. Aesthetic surgery of the lips is evolving as a significant field in facial plastic surgery.
