Abstract

This chapter discusses smoking cessation, where disorders such as cancers of the aero-digestive tract are directly linked to cigarette smoking and in patients with these disorders, cessation of smoking takes on an even greater significance. The use of opioid antagonists such as Naltrexone has been evaluated as have other drugs such as Naloxone, where mecamylamine has been used in smoking cessation. The timing of cessation and its effect on outcomes depend on a number of variables. Acupuncture has been used in an attempt to achieve cessation of smoking. Chronic obstructive disease (COPD) is often directly linked to smoking, where people with cancers of the aero-digestive tract often have COPD as well. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a routine component in smoking cessation programs. NRT and bupropion roughly double the chances of success in stopping smoking.
