Abstract

This chapter discusses cancer of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity, where carcinomas of the paranasal sinus (PNS) constitute less than 1 percent of all malignancies in the body and about 3 percent of head and neck cancers. Majority of the PNS cancers originate from the maxillary sinus. Maxillary sinus is medially bound by nasal cavity, superiorly by the orbit, anterolaterally by facial bone and posteromedially by infratemporal fossa. The anterior wall of the maxilla is formed by a thin bony plate running from the root of the canine teeth to the floor of the orbit. The nasolacrimal duct drains the lacrimal sac into the inferior meatus underneath the inferior turbinate and runs within a bony canal formed by the maxilla, lacrimal apparatus, and inferior turbinate bones. Sphenoid sinus is the posterior most paranasal sinus that is located superior to the nasopharynx.
