Abstract

This chapter discusses minimally invasive surgery in otolaryngology, where an anterior craniotomy is a useful adjunct for disease that extends intracranial and merits resection. The bicoronal incision is both functional and cosmetic, without compromising exposure, where delineation of the tumor extent with preservation of uninvolved structures can be done from below and used to guide osteotomies from above for extirpation. A logical extension beyond the posterior-lateral maxillary sinus wall is to approach tumors in the infratemporal and pterygopalatine fossae. One malignant anterior skull base lesion that has received particular attention regarding endoscopic resection is esthesioneuroblastoma. The treatment of esthesioneuroblastoma offers an interesting paradigm for malignant lesions treated endoscopically from standpoints in technique and adjuvant therapy. Otolaryngology and the other fields of surgery have only begun to explore the capabilities of surgical robotic systems. Telerobotic systems have drastically changed the size and complexity of surgical robotics.
