Abstract

Myofibril is the structural and functional subunit of muscle fibre. Myofibrils of muscle contain thick and thin filaments. The thick filaments contain myosin. The thin filament contain actin, tropomyosin and troponin complex (troponin T, I and C). The sliding filament model is the most accepted model of muscle contraction. Rigor mortis is the muscular rigidity and stiffening that begins at the moment of death due to lack of ATP. Calcium plays a central role in regulation of muscle contraction. Muscular dystrophies are group of genetic conditions characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting without involvement of nervous system. During sprint muscle uses creatine phosphate and glycolysis as energy sources; in the marathon oxidation of fatty acids is of major importance during the later phases.
