Abstract

This chapter discusses general toxicology, a science dealing with properties, actions, toxicity, fatal dose, detection, estimation and treatment of the poisonous substances. According to their mode of action, poisons are classified as corrosives and toxinology. Medico-legal aspects of poisons, factors modifying the action of poisons, diagnosis of poisoning in living, failure to detect poison, duties of a doctor in a case of suspected poisoning, management of poisoning cases, removal of unabsorbed poison, and administration of antidotes, are some topics discussed in detail. The antidotes include mechanical/physical antidotes, chemical antidotes, and physiological/pharmacological antidotes. Renal excretion may be improved for elimination of poison by giving large amounts of fluid or tea orally. Application of heat and administration of hot beverages will cause increased perspiration and speeds up the excretion of toxic agents, but its usefulness is doubtful.
