This chapter discusses identification, the complete and partial determination of the individuality of a person based on certain physical characteristics. Identification criteria such as corpus delecti, race and religion, sex, nuclear sexing, intersex, sex from skeletal remains, age from ossification of bones, age determination in adults over 25 years, and medico-legal importance of age, are some topics discussed in detail. Stature varies at different times of day by 1. 5-2 cm. it is less in the afternoon and evening due to reduced elasticity of inter-vertebral discs and the longitudinal vertebral muscles. Medico-legal importance of scars include identification of the individual, shape of scar may indicate the nature of weapon or agent that caused injury, and age of scar indicates time of infliction of injury which may have value as circumstantial evidence. Medico-legal importance of a tattoo helps in knowing the identity of a person, particularly the dead or decomposed individual, religion and nationality, and social status.
