Abstract

Auxiliary transplantation had been proposed for the treatment of acute liver failure in 1956 by Goodrich et al. in an initial description of heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation (HALT) in dogs. The most common indication for APOLT in western countries is fulminant hepatic failure. The main goal of APOLT in the setting of fulminant hepatic failure is to save the patient with no neurologic sequelae, which can be achieved only if a sufficient mass of functioning hepatic tissue is provided rapidly. The graft should serve only as temporary support and could be removed later; no essential structures of the native liver should be jeopardized.
