Liver supporting system is a system of therapies, which aim to improve outcome, provide an environment for regeneration and possible spontaneous recovery or failing that support the patient and bridge until the liver transplantation is an option. Ideal Liver supporting system should be easily available, should optimize or prevent deterioration of patient’s condition, should be cost effective and with minimal adverse effects. These are commonly used in all types of Acute Liver Failure (ALF) due to any etiology such as fulminant hepatic failure, acute decompensation of chronic liver disease, primary graft non-function, graft failure immediately after transplantation and initial poor graft function after transplantation. Different types of Liver Supporting systems are liver transplantation, plasmapheresis/exchange transfusion, cross perfusion with ex vivo liver (Human/Porcine) and extracorporeal liver support systems which includes bioartificial liver support systems (BAL) and artificial/non-biological liver support systems such as molecular adsorbent recirculation system (MARS), single pass albumin dialysis (SPAD), prometheus system (a dialysis and plasma separation-based system), hemocleanse and hemolife.
