Abstract

Historically Gold foil is the oldest and noblest of all the restorative materials described. It has been used for thousands of years. Direct filling gold still represents the standard by which technique sensitivity of restorative materials is judged. A properly placed direct gold material can yield excellent, long-lasting restorations. On the other hand, improperly placed gold will result in poor-quality restorations that may be associated with excessive leakage, dislodgment, and postoperative sensitivity. G V Black once wrote, \"No other material can be so worked against the walls of a cavity as to make full use of the sustaining power of the elasticity of the dentin\" (1908). That still holds true. Direct gold’s are those gold restorative materials that are manufactured for compaction directly into the prepared cavities.
