Objective Structured Practical Examination in Physiology

by Aarti Sood Mahajan

Objective structured practical examination in physiology introduces this form of assessment to the Indian Physiologists. In spite of popularity in medical education conferences and its usage, no book was available on OSPE. This book is a good resource material and gives a head start to those interested to introduce OSPE in Physiology. It has 4 units and 178 pages in all. The first unit has 16 chapters with question and procedure stations related to haematological investigations. A checklist is provided. The marking scheme can be varied by the user in terms of importance and the examination pattern. At present black and white pictures are provided but examiners are encouraged to use their own pictures. Unit 2 contains question stations related to muscle and nerve functions and amphibian experiments. Schematic graphs are included. Depending on the time availability at each station the number of questions can be chosen. This unit has 13 chapters. Unit 3 is based on 2 experiments routinely done on rabbit heart and intestine. Unit 4 has 34 chapters on topics related to human experiments, investigations like the ECG, EEG, Spirometry and evoked potentials and clinical examination of various systems. It has both question and procedure stations and can be used also by students who are in the final semesters studying clinical medicine. The last few pages contain some answers which may vary according to the picture, graph and question used. The book can be used for medical, dental, nursing, physiotherapy and allied paramedical undergraduate and postgraduate students.
