Contraindications are those conditions where one should administer a particular therapeutic modality. Generally the massage is considered as a safe treatment modality. However treatment by massage as such is not completely free from risk. In a literature review Ernst have listed about 23 papers that recorded adverse effects associated with massage. There are several conditions where the applications may prove counterproductive. The purpose of this chapter is to rationalize the practice of massage by presenting a detailed account of why massage should not be administered in these conditions. The contraindications of massage are divided into two groups—general and local, and each contraindication is discussed in detail.
