Abstract

Shoulder TB is a rare disease, less than 2% of all osteoarticular TB. It is essentially a disease of adults two varieties of disease have been described, atrophic type (caries sicca) and the one with formation of abscesses and sinuses; however most of the cases have a mixed picture. Rheumatoid arthritis and periarthritis may need to be differentiated. In case of doubt biopsy from the diseased tissue must be obtained for confirmation of pathology. During active stage of disease the shoulder is splinted in about 90 degrees of abduction, 30 degree of forward flexion and 30 degree of internal rotation (saluting position). Once the disease has healed compensatory movements at scapulothoracic articulation permits satisfactory function. Rarely arthrodesis of shoulder may be needed. Surgical techniques and relevant anatomy is described.
