Abstract

Before the availability of effective anti TB drugs most of the patients were treated by rest in bed, sunshine, open air, supportive therapy and traditional herbs. The results however were disappointing. All the end of 5 to 10 years the outcome in general was dead 50%, crippled and deformed 25% “healed” 25% effective anti TB drugs became available between 1945 to 1955. Availability of effective drugs changed the outcome of treatment markedly. Majority of uncomplicated cases of tuberculosis can be treated by chemotherapy alone. Operative intervention indicated for deteriorating neurology or kyphosis has been made safe.
