Abstract

Knee joint is the third common site of osteoarticular tuberculosis. Pathological changes at various stages of disease: synovitis, early arthritis, advanced arthritis with or without subluxation, burnt out stage are described. Being a superficial joint material for investigations can be obtained by aspiration. A positive PCR in the presence of clinically inflamed knee is of immense value; however, a negative PCR does not exclude tuberculosis. Best results are obtained in stage of synovitis and early arthritis by “functional treatment”. Indications for surgical treatment and operative steps are outlined for synovectomy with or without debridement, arthrodesis, and arthroplasty. Relevant surgical anatomy is described.
