Foot being vulnerable to external surroundings and trauma, infections of the foot bones is fairly common. Types of infections include Viral, Bacterial (a) pyogenic and (b) specific like Tuberculosis, Spirochetal, Fungal and parasitic infestations. Viral infections include small pox and ainhum. Amongst Bacterial infections, pyogenic osteomyelitis occurs either due to hematogenous route, contiguous, penetrating wounds, post traumatic or post operative. Garre’s osteitis and Brodie’s abscess, are rare varieties. In diabetic foot apart from dominant infection of bone there are associated factors like soft tissue infection, angiopathy and neuropathy; hence a blanket term ‘Diabetic osteopathy’ ha been coined. Specific infections include Tuberculosis and Leprosy. Unfortunately incidence of tuberculosis is very high in India. A rare form of cystic tuberculosis is described. Spirochetal infection, i.e. syphilitic infection occurs in congenital and acquired forms. Now a days HIV infection invite bone infections, especially fungal infections include Maduromycosis and Actinomycosis. Parasitic infestations are hydatid disease and filariasis. Sarcoidosis is also mentioned. A peculiar condition of thorn granuloma has been observed.
