Abstract

Variety of soft tissue lesions in and around the feet can occur due to multiple etiological factors. Soft tissue calcification and ossification is a major group. Vascular calcifications are observed in diabetics and arteriosclerosis. Abnormal calcifications have been categorised as idiopathic, metastatic, dystrophic and metabolic. Important calcifications of unknown etiology include, calcinosis universalis, calcinosis circumscripta and tumoral calcification. CREST syndromes and chondroma show calcification. Parasitic infestations like, cysticercosis, Guineaworm and hydatid cyst also show calcification. Metabolic calcifications are observed in hyperparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism and osteodystrophy. Heterotopic ossification is noted secondary to trauma, surgery, burns, and paralysis. Gas formation in the soft tissues is usually due to infection. Most serious among them is gas gangrene or Clostridial myositis. Soft tissue tumours are rare in foot; noted among them are synovioma, hemangioma, fibroma and lipomas. MRI is the modality of choice for diagnosis. Soft tissue edema can be inflammatory or venous and lymphatic obstruction, e.g. Filariasis. Soft tissue hypertrophy noted in acromegaly, thyroid acropachy and post Dilantin therapy. In a nut shell, soft tissues in and around feet show myriad conditions.
