Abstract

This chapter discusses lamellar keratoplasty. Lamellar keratoplasty was the earliest grafting technique and held that position till the 1950–60s when new trephines and 10:0 Prolene suture were developed, which made the PKP a much safer procedure. From the 1980s when the viscomaterial, Healon was introduced and revolutionized anterior segment surgery, the PKP totally replaced the lamellar technique in Sweden as in other developed countries. The lamellar technique was reintroduced as improved automatic keratomes were developed because of the development of LASIK. The complication rate is low and the risk of epithelial undergrowth has diminished to a very low rate because of the use of tissue glue, Tisseel. The new femtosecond laser will further improve the lamellar technique.
