Abstract

Keratoconus is a corneal ectatic disease that is characterized by noninflammatory progressive thinning of the paracentral and/or inferior corneal stroma. It is with progressive deformation of the cornea, in the form of irregular astigmatism, which may lead to a significant decrease in visual acuity. Although keratoconus is almost bilateral, asymmetry between eyes is frequently observed. A new treatment based on collagen cross-linking (CXL) is aimed at the pathogenic cause of keratoconus and changes intrinsic biochemical properties of corneal collagen. Epithelium and cornea permeability, surgical technique, statistical analysis, and results are discussed.
