Abstract

The placement of a human donor lenticule or synthetic material on the Bowman’s membrane in order to change the refractive power of the cornea is termed Epikeratoplasty. Werblin first described the concept of epikeratophakia in 1980. Kaufman and Werblin developed epikeratophakia for the surgical correction of aphakia. Epikeratophakia differs from the Barraquer’s technique as the refractive correction (donor lenticule) is placed on the surface of the cornea. Epikeratoplasty was a widely practiced lamellar refractive keratoplasty procedure for aphakia, myopia and keratoconus. However, problems of interface scarring and irregular astigmatism, predictability of results and decreased best-corrected visual acuity dampened the initial enthusiasm for the procedure. Epikeratoplasty still remains a surgical alternative to penetrating keratoplasty in cases of keratoconus.
