Abstract

Corneal transplantation requires particular skill sets, specialized equipment, and extensive coordination. For these reasons, transplantation is only provided by top quality facilities. A corneal transplant facility must offer top quality transplantation services, in all different types of corneal transplantation. It must employ specialized staff, right through from reception staff to corneal surgeons. Many factors must be considered when setting up a corneal transplant facility. These include: Eyebank of choice, patient coordination and education, ward availability/staffing/education, anesthetic availability, specialty theatre nurses, special equipment required, reception staff/emergency department staff training/education/availability, research, wet lab facilities.
