Abstract

Hemovigilance is a surveillance system to detect, report and analyze untoward effects of blood collection and transfusion in order to prevent their occurrence and recurrence. It can be organized in a country either through voluntary reporting or legislation. However, for logistic reasons, hemovigilance is organized based on the existing network for collection of data related to blood transfusion services in various countries. Near Miss events are errors which are detected before the transfusion of incorrect blood and help to identify hot spots for transfusion errors. Rapid alert system within hemovigilance assists in taking corrective measures within shortest possible time. Recipient hemovigilance data has lead to numerous blood safety initiatives. Donor hemovigilance is essential as the blood supply is dependent on safe blood donors. Thus, hemovigilance data can provide a powerful input into decision-making in transfusion safety.
