Abstract

Targeted therapies target or block cancer growth by interfering with specific molecules needed for carcinogenesis. They hold the promise of being more selective and less harmful to the normal cells as they are focused on molecular changes specific to cancer. The main categories of targeted therapy include small molecules, immunotherapy, anti-angiogenesis and apoptosis inducers. Imatinib mesylate is the classical example of small molecule while rituximab is the most popular and widely used example of immunotherapy. Bevacizumab is the most well known example of anti-angiogenic agent while bortezomib is the most powerful apoptosis inducer. Future of targeted therapy will focus on finding patient-specific targeted therapy.
