Abstract

High dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) has been in use since past two decades. Its role has been clearly defined in young patients of multiple myeloma without significant co-morbidities and chemosensitive relapse Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. For many other hematological and solid malignancies single center data is promising. This is also being explored for a number of nonmalignant conditions particularly autoimmune diseases. While the morbidity and mortality of ASCT has come down significantly in the past decade, relapse continues to be a major cause of failure. Identification of patients at high-risk of relapse and use of novel approaches to reduce the relapse risk are likely to be areas of research in future studies.
