Abstract

In this chapter we address functional bracing of fractures in the distal-third of the humerus. Emphasis is placed in the importance of reaching full elbow extension in a short period of time and the conduct of early passive elbow exercises in order to ensure that elbow range of motion is not compromised. The frequently associated radial palsy in these fractures is not a contraindication for bracing since most nerve deficit recovers spontaneously. Angular deformities can be brought to a minimum by gaining full extension of the elbow as early as possible and maintaining passive elbow motion in the healing progresses. A few degrees of angular deformity are inconsequential from the functional and cosmetic points of view.
