Abstract

Miscarriage, when occurs, is unsuspected and devastating to the involved couple. The various types progress from an early threat of miscarriage to end in complete expulsion of the conceptus. Most miscarriages are sporadic and are nature’s way of avoiding the birth of a malformed fetus. When recurrent, treatable causes should be looked for aggressively and remedial measures undertaken where possible. Increased understanding of the immunology of pregnancy promises the possibility of preventing some of these recurrent losses. Induced abortion, when indicated, should be offered to women after adequate counseling which should include the available options. Contraceptive advice should be a part of this counseling. Complications can be minimized by choosing the appropriate method for the gestation and the use of prophylactic antibiotics.
