Abstract

The basis for the various morphological changes and their different clinical presentations is the alterations that take place within the layers of the lens. Compared with the normal lens, the cataractous lens is characterized by changes in the distribution of the epithelial cells. Cataract which is the predominantly encountered cause of failing vision in clinical practice is of different types depending on the changes that can occur in the capsule, lens epithelium or substance. Thus the manifestation as sub-capsular, cortical or nuclear cataract occurs. Subluxations and dislocations of the lens have an underlying zonular weakness and such alterations in the lens may be the manifestation of systemic diseases. Histopathology of the lens evaluates the epithelium, zonular fibres and identifies the presence of pigments. 4 types of pathological changes in the lens are zonular alteration, capsular alteration, epithelial changes and lens substance changes.
