by Sunita Tandulwadkar, Bhavana Mittal
Infertility as a specialty has grown by leaps and bounds to surpass even endoscopy. It is today the fastest growing superspeciality. Although the incidence of infertility remains around 10–15% of the population, more and more couples are now seeking help. IVF, ICSI, GIFT, ZIFT and all these fancy acronyms may be the glamor gals but the time tested and real workhorse of infertility is the simple and elegant IUI. This is a procedure that is easy, safe, has a small learning curve and can form part of the clinical armamentarium of the general gynecologist. As primary care providers for our patients, we need to develop our skills in practice of IUI to give maximum benefit to them. So that when need comes to refer to an ART clinic both parties are very sure and satisfied that they put in their best efforts. Starting from the basics of ovulation induction and sperm preparation to the procedure itself.
