Abstract

The radiation exposure and protection are important to the radiologist as CT scan uses radiation which is several folds higher than conventional radiography. The justification of benefit to risk ratio, optimization of radiological procedures and dose limitations are stressed to obtain the best results and avoiding unwanted exposure to high doses of radiation. The units of radiation, the biological effects of radiation, and the various effective doses received in CT scan, principles of radiation protection (time, distance and shielding) and the recommended dose limits are discussed.
