Abstract

Genes are carried on chromosomes. The number of chromosomes in a cell is generally the same in all human cell populations. The position of a gene is very specifically located on a chromosome. Chromosomes are again classified into groups according to their shape, size as well as the type of physical character associated with them. Some chromosomes carry genes that determine somatic organogenesis in the individual whereas some chromosomes define the sex of the person. Structure of a chromosome is studied by karyotyping. X-inactivation occurring in a cell containing more than one X chromosome is seen as Barr bodies.
