A Guide to Mental Health & Psychiatric Nursing

by Sreevani R, Prasanthi N

Health is a state of complete physical mental, social and spiritual well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Both physical and mental healths are interdependent. A nurse who is responsible for total health care of a person must take care of both physical and emotional needs; therefore she should develop a basic understanding and skill in psychiatric nursing to achieve total health care. The third edition of “A Guide to Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing” is designed to help the nurses to successfully meet today’s health care challenges by presenting newest information from psychiatric mental health nursing and psychiatry. The balance nursing, medical and psychosocial approach, with strong emphasis on ICD10 guidelines and related treatments, remain a distinguishing feature of this publication. All nursing interventions are described with detailed nursing care plan approach. The key features in all the chapters are highlighted so as to draw the attention of the student nurse and aid retention. They include: (i) ICD10 criteria for specific mental disorders, (ii) Etiology, epidemiology, risk factors, nursing assessment, interventions and outcomes for various mental disorders, (iii) Various treatment modalities and interventions that are used in conjunction with nursing interventions in the treatment of a particular disorder, (iv) Geriatric considerations, follow-up, home care, and rehabilitation, patient and family teaching provide valuable education for both the patient and the family to facilitate insight and skills concerning the patient disorders. A few review questions have been included at the end of each chapter. Illustrations in the form of figures, tables and boxes have been included wherever necessary for better understanding of the subject and improving the retention level among the students.
