A nurse is the one who has closer contact with the patient than any other member of the hospital team and as such has an extremely important role to play in the treatment of mentally ill. This chapter focuses on core concepts in psychopharmacology, general guidelines in drug administration and patient education. Following classification of psychotropic agents are also addressed: antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, anti epileptics, anti parkinsonian drugs and drugs used in child psychiatry. Each classification is discussed with a focus on mechanism of action, side effects, contraindications and nurse’s responsibility. Appendix—21 of the text book covers detailed description of commonly used psychiatric drugs. As psychotherapy also plays an equally important role in improving the patient condition various psychotherapies such as individual psychotherapy, psychoanalytical psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, supportive psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, behavior therapy, play therapy, music therapy, relaxation therapy have been adequately covered. A paradigm shift is occurring within our society, wherein growing number of people are adapting a holistic approach rather than a purely allopathic one. As a result many complimentary and alternative healing modalities have been developed in psychiatry. To bring about an understanding of these therapies, classification, procedures and nurses responsibilities have been covered in detail. Brief description on occupational therapy and suggested occupational activities for psychiatric disorders has been given. Under physical therapies electroconvulsive therapy, light therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation are explained.
