Abstract

Seizures account for 1 to 2 percent of all emergency department (ED) visits. The focus of ED management is to stabilize the patient, terminate the seizure activity safely and quickly, identify and treat life-threatening conditions and to initiate follow-up. Several times, a child may present with a condition that can mimic or be misinterpreted as an epileptic seizure. These conditions include convulsive syncope with or without cardiac dysrhythmia, decerebrate posturing, psychogenic events, dystonia, migraine and many others depending upon the age of the patient. A seizure has to be differentiated from these conditions as misdiagnosis can have significant therapeutic implications.
