Abstract

Combined surgical management of coexisting cataract and glaucoma has gained popularity because of several advantages, namely decreased risk and easier management of early postoperative intraocular pressure spikes, better long term glaucoma control and need to perform only one surgical procedure to manage both cataract and chronic glaucoma. Surgical procedures are explained. Suturing of the implant is easier in a firm globe, while phacoemulsification is facilitated by a closed chamber. The surgical technique of a combined procedure involving AGV implantation with concomitant phacoemulsification thus does not follow a rigid algorithm, but is dependent on the surgeon’s preference. Surgical technique, postoperative care, and clinical studies on combined surgery with a shunt are described.
