Abstract

Viscocanalostomy is aimed not only at taking the advantages of being non-penetrating, as deep sclerectomy, but most important in restoring the physiological outflow pathway, thus avoiding any external filtration. Viscocanalostomy increases the aqueous outflow through different mechanism of action. Surgical technique is explained. Viscocanalostomy has specific indications and contraindications. Viscocanalostomy seems effective in lowering IOP in glaucomatous eyes. It has low complications, an easy post-operative management and is inducing significant less eye discomfort than trabeculectomy, as could be expected considering the absence of the filtering bleb in the majority of the cases. Viscocanalostomy has several potential advantages over trabeculectomy, the major being the absence of external filtration and thus the independence of conjunctival and episcleral scarring.
