Abstract

Abstract

This chapter discusses recent advances in drainage implant surgery. Valveless shunts, valved implants, and indications are explained. The Baerveldt implant, the Ahmed valve, potential shunt risks, and aqueous shunts in pediatric group are reviewed. Surgical technique discusses the basic principles, postoperative care, complications, and results of implants. Drainage implants have been successful in maintaining the patency of the fistula in glaucoma filtering surgeries. Though implant designs differ, a proper surgical technique with a very meticulous closure and keen attention to tube patency will lead to fairly successful results in cases where all other surgeries have failed.
