Abstract

Glaucoma may be effectively controlled medically, with laser or surgically while the only effective management of cataract is surgical. Therefore, several main directions should be chosen; to combine cataract surgery with medical treatment of glaucoma or to perform surgical treatment of both. The field of glaucoma is in a period of transition, and the surgical options for the simultaneous treatment of cataract and glaucoma continue to evolve. The advantages of trabeculectomy are that the technique is well known and has a longer follow-up in the scientific literature. Combination of phacoemulsification and DS, that is, phaco-deep sclerectomy results in less postoperative complications, which makes it an attractive alternative to the other approaches. There is growing evidence that nonpenetrating filtration surgery together with phacoemulsification is safe and effective in the short and medium terms. Combining these two procedures is a viable option for many patients.
