Abstract

In this chapter, we shall discuss the common problems with respect to their clinical presentations and outcomes. This would help the obstetricians to offer an overview to the parents of the newborn with a surgical problem. Detailed consultation can then be carried out with the pediatric surgeons. For the purpose of clarity this chapter will describe the malformations in two sub-groups: (A) Non-genitourinary malformations and (B) Genitourinary malformations. While a list of these anomalies is being enumerated, the common conditions are described in more detail. Management of neonatal surgical problems defines the specialty of “Pediatric Surgery”. Not only is the actual surgical procedure important, but the preoperative preparation and postoperative management is critical for a successful outcome. An optimal coordinating efforts between obstetricians, neonatologists and pediatric surgeons is essential for optimal outcomes.
