Abstract

Till date Chorionic villous sampling (CVS) remains the earliest technique for prenatal diagnosis, with a fetal loss rate of less than 2% is experienced hands. There is no increased risk of limb reduction defects if performed after 10 weeks of gestation and the technique is highly accurate. A recent review has shown no significant difference in risk between transabdominal CVS and midtrimester amniocentesis. Amniocentesis is the most commonly performed procedure when fetal chromosomal or genetic disorders are suspected. It is an extremely safe procedure with minimal risks, particularly when real time sonography guidance is used. However, expertise is mandatory to maintain the complication rate to the minimum. The use of prenatal diagnosis helps many couples in making valuable judjements regarding their pregnancies and aids obstetricians/neonatologists in making management decisions. It is extremely important not to misuse this procedure. Fetal blood sampling provides information that is not obtainable by other techniques for fetal assessment. It has tremendous fetal diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and exciting research potential. In a short span of time, cord blood sampling has become an indispensable and efficient technique in fetal medicine. It however is an art that requires deft and skill, and should preferably be done in referral centers to maximize safety, and optimize patient management.
