Abstract

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is one of the most common indications of vitreoretinal surgery. Although conventionally RRD has been managed by 20 G pars plana techniques, in recent times sutureless 25 G, 23 G and even sutureless 20 G techniques have been used. Owing to the increasing familiarity and high success rate obtained with vitreoretinal surgical techniques, scleral buckling has been supplanted but remains an effective alternative. Presently, surgical approach in uncomplicated retinal detachment is largely surgeon-dependent and also, depends on the vitreoretinal surgical armamentarium available. Despite increasing complexity involved in these techniques, the basic steps involved in vitreoretinal surgery for the management of RRD remain the same and shall be discussed in this chapter.
