As always, this year’s Update contains articles on a range of topics relevant to Critical Care. I hope, readers of this book will come away with refreshed ideas about aspects of their work and will change practice to improve the quality of patient care. If, as a result of this, loss of a single human life is prevented or if a complication is avoided, then the goal of this exercise would be achieved. It has become something of a tradition to include in the Update, topics that relate directly to patient management and also those that indirectly impact on patient care. This year’s theme on Manpower is the reason for inclusion of four ‘off-beat’ but fascinating chapters at the beginning of the book. Issues like teamwork, burn out and shift-work are particularly relevant to the specialty of Intensive Care. Therefore, I recommend these chapters to all the readers of the book.
