Abstract

A variety of options exist in establishing a cricothyrotomy. This chapter will outline when to do an emergency cricothyrotomy, what options are available with respect to technique, what equipment to use and how best to train for what is a rarely performed procedure. The best technique to establish an emergency cricothyrotomy remains controversial. It appears that the best approach will be one that is individualized on the basis of skills possessed by the clinician dealing with the emergent situation, the type of equipment available, as well as the patient’s anatomical features and cause of airway obstruction. Skills and training need to be not only theoretically but practically orientated. Although an uncommon procedure, the placement of an emergency cricothyrotomy should be a skill that each intensive care specialist has as part of their armamentarium to deal with a “can’t intubate; can’t ventilate” crisis.
