Practical Management of Diabetes

by Ajit B Kumthekar

The book, “Practical Management of DIABETES”, provides useful information in managing diabetes for a practicing doctor to upgrade his knowledge and skills in treating diabetes. Diabetes is a silent killer and a cause for a lot of morbidity and suffering. Today, there is an earlier onset of diabetes in the population, which means that we need to treat these patients aggressively so that they can be complication-free for many years to come. Diabetes is a life-style disease and it has no curative treatment. Only thing needed is to properly control the disease, so that the person can lead a near-normal life. It is mainly a metabolic disorder caused due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. Type II diabetes is the result of insulin resistance and beta cell failure. Diabetes is a silent disease and detailed information must be sought by in-depth history taking. Measurement of blood glucose is the only way to confirm diagnosis of diabetes. Good control of diabetes can be achieved by lifestyle modification (Diet, exercise and de-addiction) and with proper use of medications. Hypoglycemic drugs like sulfonylurea, meglitinides, metformin, alpha glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, incretin-based agents, and insulin have proved beneficial in managing diabetes. If not treated, diabetes can lead to micro- and macrovascular complications. Some pregnant women experience gestational diabetes at the time of delivery which can lead to several complications.
