Abstract

This topic needs to be given full attention in all our hospitals with continued quality checks at regular intervals. The operating room linen should be first washed by hand, dried, sealed and then autoclaved alternatively disposable wear can be used where practical. Intraocular and I.V fluids should be autoclaved before use. Five chief methods that can be used for sterilization include moist heat, dry neat, ionising radiation, sterilant gases and sterilant liquids. Disinfection is applied where sterilisation is not practical. It can be done by the use of ultraviolet radiation, gases, filtration and by chemicals. Quality checks can be carried out by means of plate tests and cultures taken from operating room walls, fixtures, floor, furniture, all fluids to be used, and by biological chemical indicators for specialized equipment’s. The surgeon’s hands and linen and textiles should also be cultured.
