Abstract

Opening of the eye, i.e. widen up of the interpalpebral fissure from zero to widest possible width. This function is essential for vision. It keeps the pupillary area exposed. The other purpose is to let evaporation occur from the corneal and conjunctival surface, this keeps the cornea cool and also helps evaporate part of the tear. The widening of the interpalpebral fissure is brought about by levator palpheral superior and Muller’s muscle via third nerve and cervical sympathetic respectively. Closing of the lids, i.e. narrowing of the interpalpebral fissure from maxim to zero width. The main purpose is protective. This also helps in spreading of the tears. This is brought by orbicularis via seventh nerve.
