Abstract

The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve. It is motor as well as sensory nerve. It does not contribute any motor neurons to ocular muscles. The motor part innervates the muscles of mastication, masseter, pterygoid and temporalis. None of the above are involved in neuro-ophthalmic disorders. It is only the sensory component that has ocular involvement. Out of the three sensory branches, i.e. ophthalmic, mandibular and maxillary, the ophthalmic nerve is fully involved in sensory supply of the eye and its adnexa. The second division serves a small part of the lower part of orbit and the lower lid. The maxillary division does not have any involvement in ocular diseases.
