The aim of this book is to focus on the essentials of practical microbiology. The new edition is prepared as per the competency based medical education (CBME) MBBS curriculum and the content of the book is modified from the traditional organism-based teaching to system-based. This is the only practical textbook in “clinical microbiology” based on infective syndromes and written in class-wise pattern according to undergraduate practical schedule. The book is categorized into two sections that focus on Microbiology, Immunology and Hospital Infection Control and Systemic Microbiology (Infectious Diseases). General microbiology chapters are meticulously restructured with the inclusion of general virology, general parasitology, and general mycology chapters. Immunology chapters are thoroughly updated. Various topics have been updated such as MAC ELISA, Elek’s gel precipitation test, etc. have been updated. Hospital infection control (HIC) chapters need a special mention. In the era of COVID-19 pandemic, the practical application of hospital infection control is being increased to thousand folds. Every healthcare personnel are supposed to be well verse with the finer details of HIC. Therefore, the updated version of this section will be a key in making of a skilled Indian medical graduate. Section II comprises of several chapters; each chapter comprises of several infective syndromes pertaining to system. Each infective syndrome starts with a problem-solving exercise, followed by the detailed information about the etiological agent(s) and covers the important practical aspects of the topic. This book will help the students to prepare for their practical examination and help the teacher to modify or update the practical examination pattern.
