Abstract

Research must be both published and publicized. Publishing has a far wider reach and lasts far longer. Research can be presented to colleagues and peers at conferences, workshops, seminars, CMEs, symposia, panel discussions, debates etc. The purpose of these presentations is to convince the audience about the merits of your research. This is achieved essentially by the good quality of research and equally importantly by its skillful effective presentation. People would rather listen to a good speaker with poor science than to a bad speaker with good science. Skillful and convincing presentation needs an expertise in public speaking. This is achieved by attending professional courses in public speaking and by repeatedly practicing your presentation before the event. Preparing good power point slides is a science that needs to be mastered. Making effective use of power point slides and the laser pointer is an art in itself that must be learnt and cultivated. You must talk to your audience and not read your slides. You should make eye contact with different sections of the audience throughout. Don’t be monotonous. Vary your pitch and tone and use gestures to emphasize important points. Your gait, attire and posture are also important. Your first few sentences are crucial. Don’t end abruptly but end with a carry home message. Never exceed the time allotted for your presentation.
